What to do in the Event of a Fire
See our infographic about what to do in the event of a fire in your business.
Stay alert. Stay calm. Stay safe.
A fire safety routine can save lives. Follow these instructions to keep you and your staff safe from harm.
Raise the alarm
If you spot a fire, the first thing you should do is sound the alarm. Find your nearest fire alarm call point and activate it. The alarm will sound and alert others to the fire.
Call 999
Call 999 and request the emergency fire services. Tell them there is a fire on your premises and you are in need of assistance.
Turn off hazardous machinery
If you are working with dangerous machinery, turn it off before you exit. Active machinery can become a hazard to others during evacuation.
Leave through the nearest fire exit
There should be visible fire exit signs that point you towards a fire exit. Leave through the exit in an orderly fashion, ensuring nothing is blocking the exit as you leave.
Meet at a designated fire point
If you’re a business owner, you need to establish a designated fire point for all staff to meet after evacuating the building.
Take a headcount
Gathering everyone in one place makes it easier to take a headcount. Ensure everyone has evacuated the building and alert the emergency fire services if anybody is still inside.
Do not re-enter the building
You may be tempted to re-enter the building to recover personal items or alert others who haven’t yet evacuated. However, you should never re-enter a building after you have evacuated, as you may be putting yourself and others in greater danger.
