How Much Space Do You Need For A Roller Shutter?

One of the biggest advantages of roller shutters and roller garage doors is the amount of space they can save.

As opposed to traditional up and over doors, roller shutters incorporate a system that sees the doors retract into a box on the ceiling when opened – meaning space is maximised and you don’t need to worry about access becoming restricted by vehicles or large objects.

Ideal for premises and businesses that require a lot of unloading, it’s important to leave enough space for these types of doors to be properly installed.

In this article, we’ll explore exactly how much space is required to install roller shutters and guide you through the measuring process.

Here at Royal Industrial Doors, we supply and install quality roller shutters and roller garage doors – give us a call on [ld_default] for a quote!

How Much Space Will I Require?

One of the most important things to consider when installing roller shutters or roller garage doors is the headroom behind the lintel. The lintel is the horizontal block that runs along the top of the structure where your door is going to go.

The operating mechanism for the shutters will be placed just behind the lintel so it’s important it has enough space – otherwise your shutters or doors may not fit.

Typically, you will need 300mm (205mm for a compact door) of headroom for an insulated roller garage door and 450mm for a single skin steel shutter or door. If you do not have this much space available then let the Royal Industrial Doors team know and we’ll see what we can do.

When it comes to the sides of the opening where your door is going to go, there also needs to be a certain amount of space. For an insulated roller garage door, you’ll require space between 60mm-90mm, and for a single skin steel shutter or door, you will need 90-175mm of space.

What Happens in the Measuring Process?

When it comes to measuring the space where you’re planning to implement a roller shutter or garage roller door, the first thing to remember is you should always hire a professional to do it. This is so you can guarantee everything is measured perfectly to meet your requirements.

Unlike with other installations, there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to roller shutters or garage doors so it’s integral all your measurements are taken in a professional manner.

The team will also need to know if there are any pipes, ductwork or electrics above, below or to the sides of where the shutters or doors are being placed. If there are, they may need to be removed or incorporated into the installation. They’ll also check if the floor is even or sloping.

Usually, we’ll measure the opening width first, taking three measurements and using the largest if they differ. We’ll then do the same thing with the height. The width and height dimensions will normally give us a good indication of what we’re working with.

In total we’ll take measurements for:

– Structural opening width

– Structural opening height

– Headroom within the garage

– Side room left

– Side room right

Remember, always get a professional to take your measurements because if you get it wrong, it could end up costing you a lot of money.
